DEVOURING
"䷚” is the first part of a project made in Japan during the years 2017 and 2020. This first part is a collaboration work with Mariya Olegovna. It is a photographic book with a long poem running through it. The second one, “Punish My Body Until I Believe In My Soul” [➝], is a performance that happened in Tokyo at the end of January 2020 made with Marc Lochner.
The original idea of the book title was to combine two kanji characters representing the duality between creation and the inevitable destruction it implies, but also mutilation without which there can be no liberation.
Drawing on this idea of juxtaposed symbols, the title was finally inspired by the hexagrams from the canonical Book of Changes of the I Ching - the ancient Chinese manual of binary signs based on opposition and harmony, Yin and Yang, with its inherent antagonism.
The title is hexagram n°27. It evokes the act of devouring, swallowing, the junction between the lips, at once a place of meeting, of suture, but also of separation, dichotomy, forever being torn apart. Together but separate. "Between the lips of the kiss / The window pane of solitude" wrote Gilbert-Lecomte.

“䷚” est la première partie d’un projet conçu au Japon entre les années 2017 et 2020. Il s’agit d’un livre photographique parcouru par un long poème rélisé en collaboration avec Mariya Olegovna. La seconde partie, “Punish My Body Until I Believe In My Soul”, est une performance réalisée à Tokyo fin Janvier 2020 avec Marc Lochner.
L’idée initiale du titre du livre était d’associer deux kanji symbolisant la dualité entre la création et la nécessaire destruction qu’elle implique, mais aussi la mutilation sans laquelle toute libération est impossible.
Sur cette même idée d’opposition de signes, le titre s’est finalement inspiré des hexagrammes issus du Traité canonique des mutations (Yi Jing) - manuel chinois fait d’un système de signes binaires partant d’une opposition / complémentarité entre les principes d’engendrement Yin et Yang et portant en lui ce principe d’antagonisme.
L’hexagramme qui compose le titre est l’hexagramme n°27. Il symbolise la dévoration, l’avalement, mais aussi le point de jonction des lèvres, à la fois lieu de rencontre, de suture, mais aussi de séparation, éternellement bifide. Ensemble mais séparées. « Entre les lèvres du baiser / La vitre de la solitude » écrivait

“䷚” contains one or two original silver gelatin prints (24x20cm), one original drawing and an acid-worn steel needle as a binding kit. The 48-page (20X28cm) book is offset-printed on 300gsm Arena Ivory stock with jaspage edging and finished in a handmade matt velvet box (22x30x3cm) wrapped in a leather skin secured with a hemp shibari rope and a poem lying inside.

«䷚» contient une épreuve gélatino-argentique originale (24x20cm), un dessin
original et une aiguille en acier travaillée à l’acide comprise dans un “kit de reliure”. Le livre de 48 pages (20 x 28 cm) est imprimé en offset sur du papier Arena Ivory 300 g/m² dont la bordure est jaspée. L’ensemble prend place dans une boîte-écrin en velours noir mat faite à la main (22 x 30 x 3 cm). Elle est présentée enveloppée dans une peau en cuir elle-même enlacée par une corde de shibari en chanvre. C’est le poème à l’intérieur qui lie l’ensemble.
